The New Jersey Department of Education’s administrative regulations (N.J.A.C. 6A:8-3.1) define gifted and talented students as, “Those students who possess or demonstrate high levels of ability, in one or more content areas, when compared to their chronological peers in the local district and who require modification of their educational program if they are to achieve in accordance with their capabilities.”

The district’s K-5 two-tiered SAGE program seeks to enhance the quality of education for all students through a combination of strategies including differentiation, enrichment, and acceleration. All students are encouraged by the classroom teacher, in cooperation with the SAGE teacher, to develop higher-order thinking skills in every subject area.

In Tier 1 (K-3), all students receive enrichment in the classroom setting. Differentiated activities and hands-on learning encourage critical thinking through analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Students utilize the “4Cs” - critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication in order to grow as 21st century learners.

Tier II (pull-out model beginning in grade 4), offers a separate program for students who have been identified using multiple measures of criteria to ensure a comprehensive, fair selection process.  All students are evaluated annually so that new students may be identified and included in the program.  In following the New Jersey Department of Education’s guidelines as well as those recommended by the National Association of Gifted Children, the district uses the following multiple measures of criteria, with up to 10% of the student population qualifying for the program:

  • Inview Cognitive Assessment (Grade 3 and Grade 5)
  • Teachers College Independent Reading Level
  • Renaissance Learning Reading Results
  • Renaissance Learning Mathematics Results
  • My Math Diagnostic Benchmark Assessment
  • Teacher Feedback Rubric

In grade 6, a final selection process exists that evaluates students for SAGE using the following criteria:

  • Language Arts Renaissance Score
  • Math Renaissance Score
  • Cognitive Student Index Assessment
  • Teacher Feedback (completed by grade level teams)

The district is also reviewing our current SAGE programming to ensure we offer all students with a cutting-edge opportunity for enrichment, and will communicate any changes that occur to parents in the future.
